Hologic Bids $85M on French Imaging Company

Hologic announced plans to expand its imaging and breast health portfolio last week, revealing their intent to bid $85 million on SuperSonic Imagine, manufacturer of a novel ultrasound company based in Aix-en-Provence, France. The acquisition is the latest in a wave of activity in the women’s health space, where Hologic has been a dominant acquirer of innovative technologies, including a recent $125 million purchase of breast cancer surgical technology Focal Therapeutics.

SuperSonic Imagine has $29 million in sales, less than 15% of which are U.S. based; Hologic says that growing sales in the U.S. market is strategically key to the acquisition. Importantly, the transaction will also enable Hologic to enter the $450 million cart-based global breast ultrasound market, which the company says is a segment growing in the high single digits as the technology is increasingly being used as an adjunct to mammography in women with dense breast tissue.
